In many diseases, such as diabetes, neurodegenerative disorders, and cancer, alterations of the intra- and extracellular metabolism play a decisive role. However, until now, physicians have only been able to effectively determine these metabolic changes in the clinic using radioactive positron emission tomography (PET). Hyperpolarized tracers have now been developed for non-invasive monitoring of the metabolism using Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy Imaging (MRSI). However, their handling and use in the clinic are still challenging. Therefore, I search for new ways to simplify tumor detection and monitor therapy response by combining MRI, PET, and an innovative high-field Deuterium Metabolic Imaging approach.
