Research interest

In Europe, approximately 1.5 % of the population over the age of 65 shows symptoms of Parkinson’s disease (PD), which is characterized by brain inclusions containing amongst others the protein alpha-synuclein (aSYN). A positron emission tomography (PET) tracer, for the detection of aSYN aggregation in vivo, which would facilitate early diagnosis and monitor disease progression, is not yet available. Therefore, my research focuses on the evaluation of small molecule compounds that can potentially be used as a PET tracer for early aSYN detection. Furthermore, the mechanisms causing PD are not explored in detail yet. Another focus of my research is to get a deeper insight into neuronal connections involved in the dopaminergic system using an optogenetic approach.
