Research interest
Research interest and short biography:
Bettina Weigelin is Professor of Preclinical Imaging of the Immune System and leads the Multiscale Immunoimaging Lab at the Werner Siemens Imaging Center. Her research investigates how immune cells interact with tumors across spatial and temporal scales, integrating intravital multiphoton microscopy, light-sheet imaging of cleared tissues, and whole-body PET/MR. This multiscale approach connects single-cell dynamics with tissue-level organization and systemic immune responses in cancer and chronic inflammation.
She obtained her PhD from Radboud University in the Netherlands, where she pioneered higher harmonic generation microscopy in tumor tissue and applied dynamic multiphoton imaging to study T cell function and cancer cell invasion. Supported by a Rubicon Young Investigator Award, she continued this research as Junior Faculty at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, focusing on immune resistance in bone metastases. In 2019, she returned to Germany to establish her own research group and was appointed to a W2 professorship in 2021.
